The current Romanian Leu (RON) was introduced in 2005, replacing the old Leu (ROL) at a rate of 10,000 old Lei to 1 new Leu. This redenomination was part of Romania's efforts to modernize its economy and prepare for eventual Euro adoption.
The name 'Leu' means 'lion' in Romanian, derived from the Dutch thalers (leeuwendalers, or lion dollars) which circulated in the region in the 17th century.
