Currency Wiki (CurrencyWiki Technologies LLC, "we", "our" or "us") respects your privacy. This policy explains what information our iOS app ("App") collects, how it is used, how long it is kept and the choices you have. The App needs no account: you are identified only by an anonymous device ID hash.
1. Information We Collect
The App collects only what it needs to work:
Device ID hash
A one-way SHA-256 hash of your device identifier, used for anonymous sign-in and to keep track of your AI scan allowance. It cannot be reversed to identify your device. It is kept in the iOS Keychain, so reinstalling the App returns the same anonymous account.
AI scanner photos
Photos of price tags, receipts and restaurant menus that you choose to scan with the AI scanner. Section 5 explains how they are processed and deleted.
AI scan results and allowance
The prices and items read from your scans, and how many AI scans you have used, are kept on our servers so your allowance can be applied.
Purchases
If you subscribe or restore a purchase, the App sends the App Store transaction IDs to our servers so we can check them with Apple. We never see your card or payment details.
Advertising data (free plan)
On the free plan, Google AdMob collects data to show ads. Section 3 explains what it collects and your choices.
Conversion history and settings
Your conversion history, favourites and display settings are stored only on your device and are never uploaded.
2. Information We Do Not Collect
The App does not collect:
- Names or contact information
- Email addresses
- Phone numbers
- Precise (GPS) location
- Your contacts
- Browsing history
- Data from other apps
- Card or payment details
- Your photo library (photos you pick go through Apple's photo picker, which needs no library permission)
3. Advertising and Tracking
The free plan shows ads from Google AdMob: a banner, an occasional full-screen ad, and an optional rewarded ad. Pro subscribers see no ads and no consent or tracking prompts.
The App asks for permission to track through Apple's App Tracking Transparency. If you allow it, Google may use your device's advertising identifier (IDFA) to show personalised ads. If you do not, ads are not personalised and the IDFA is not available to Google.
In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Google's consent form appears first. You can change your choice later in the App under Settings › Privacy choices.
To show and measure ads, Google AdMob may collect:
- Device identifiers, including the IDFA only if you allow tracking
- Approximate location, derived from your IP address
- Ad interactions, such as views and taps
- Diagnostic data, such as crashes and performance of the ad
4. Rewarded Ads
You can choose to watch a rewarded ad to get 3 extra AI scans. When you do, the App's anonymous account ID is passed to Google with the ad. Google then confirms the completed view to our server, which adds the scans to your account.
5. AI Price Scanner
Photos you scan with the AI scanner (price tags, receipts and restaurant menus) are sent over an encrypted connection to our servers and read by Google Gemini. OpenAI is configured as a backup and is used only if Gemini is unavailable. With the photo we send your target currency and, so that menu dishes can be translated, your app language.
Photos are stored only while they are processed and are deleted automatically within 30 minutes. The text results of a scan (the prices and items read from it) are deleted automatically after 7 days.
The live OCR scanner is different: it runs entirely on your device, works offline and sends nothing to our servers.
6. Subscriptions
Apple handles all payments. We never see your card or payment details.
After a purchase or a restore, the App sends the App Store transaction IDs to our servers. We check them with Apple and turn on Pro for your anonymous account. One subscription works on up to 5 of your devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
7. Widgets and Apple Watch
Home Screen widgets and the Apple Watch app download exchange rates from our servers themselves. The iPhone sends the watch your currency list and display settings over Apple's WatchConnectivity. Nothing else leaves your devices for them.
8. Third-Party Services
These services receive data when you use the related feature:
| Provider | Purpose | Data shared |
|---|---|---|
| Google AdMob | Ads on the free plan | Device identifiers (IDFA only with your permission), approximate location from IP address, ad interactions, diagnostics |
| Google Gemini | Reading prices in AI scans | Scan photo, target currency, app language |
| OpenAI | Backup for AI scans, only if Gemini is unavailable | Scan photo, target currency, app language |
| Apple App Store | Subscriptions and payments | Apple handles payment; we receive transaction IDs |
| Currency.Wiki servers | Exchange rates, AI scans, allowance and Pro status | Device ID hash, scan photos, transaction IDs |
9. Analytics and Crash Reporting
The App does not include third-party analytics or crash reporting:
- Google Analytics or Firebase Analytics
- Crash reporting services such as Crashlytics or Sentry
- Facebook SDK
If this changes, we will update this policy before the change reaches the App.
10. Where Data Is Stored and Security
On your device
Conversion history and settings are stored in a local database on your device and never uploaded. Your device ID hash and sign-in token are kept in the iOS Keychain. The live OCR scanner counts its sessions on the device.
On our servers
Your AI scan allowance, scan results (for 7 days) and subscription status are kept on our servers, linked to your anonymous account.
In transit
All connections use HTTPS/TLS encryption, and requests to our servers are authenticated with a token for your anonymous account.
11. Data Retention
We keep data only as long as it is needed:
| Data | How long it is kept |
|---|---|
| AI scanner photos | Deleted automatically within 30 minutes |
| AI scan results | Deleted automatically after 7 days |
| AI scan allowance | Free: resets weekly. Pro: resets monthly |
| Device ID hash and Pro status | Until you ask us to delete them |
| Purchase records | As long as needed to provide Pro and meet legal and accounting obligations |
| Conversion history and settings | On your device until you delete them or the App |
| Advertising data | Kept by Google under Google's privacy policy |
12. Your Rights and Choices
- Allow or refuse tracking at any time in iOS Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking
- In the EEA, UK and Switzerland, change your ad consent in the App under Settings › Privacy choices
- Remove ads entirely by subscribing to Pro
- Delete your conversion history in the App, or delete the App to remove all local data
- Allow or deny camera access at any time in iOS Settings; manual conversion works without it
- Ask for a copy of, or the deletion of, the data our servers hold for your App by emailing [email protected]
13. GDPR and CCPA
For users in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland (GDPR)
You have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict and port your data, and to object to processing. Our legal bases are contract (providing the App's features and Pro), legitimate interests (anonymous sign-in, scan allowances and preventing abuse) and consent (personalised ads). You can withdraw consent at any time as described in section 12.
For California users (CCPA)
We do not sell personal information. If you allow tracking, Google may use your advertising identifier to personalise ads, which California law may treat as sharing for cross-context behavioural advertising. You can refuse this in the tracking prompt or in iOS Settings, and you may ask what data we hold and ask us to delete it.
14. Camera
The App uses the camera only while you are scanning, for the AI scanner and the live OCR scanner. Photos you choose from your library go through Apple's photo picker, which does not give the App access to the rest of your library.
15. Children's Privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe we have, please contact us and we will delete it.
16. Changes to This Policy
We will update this policy when the App changes how it handles data, and change the date at the top of this page.
